4. His Name Was Called Jesus

And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

This is a book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

1. Abraham begat Isaac;

2. Isaac begat Jacob;

3. Jacob begat Judas and his brethren;

4. Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar;

5. Phares begat Esrom;

6. Esrom begat Aram;

7. Aram begat Aminadab;

8. Aminadab begat Naasson;

9. Naasson begat Salmon;

10. Salmon begat Booz of Rachab;

11. Booz begat Obed of Ruth;

12. Obed begat Jesse;

13. Jesse begat David the king;

14. David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias; and Solomon sat on the throne.

5. Josaphat begat Joram;

6. Joram begat Ozias;

7. Ozias begat Joatham;

8. Joatham begat Achaz;

9. Achaz begat Ezekias;

10. Ezekias begat Manasses;

11. Manasses begat Amon;

12. Amon begat Josias;

13. Josias begat

14. Jechonias and his brethren, about the time they were carried away to Babylon:

And after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias begat Salathiel;

1. Salathiel begat Zorobabel;

2. Zorobabel begat Abiud;

3. Abiud begat Eliakim;

13. Mary, of whom was born

14. Jesus, who is called Christ.

So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.

Now ends this book of the generation of Jesus Christ.

Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.

And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, “Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.”

When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.

And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh.

8. This Is My Beloved Son, in Whom I Am Well Pleased

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene, Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.

And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins; As it is written in the prophets, “Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.”

“The voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.’”

In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, And saying, “Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.’ Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth; And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.”

John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.

Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan, And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, “O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?”

“Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance: And think not to say within yourselves, ‘We have Abraham to our father:’ for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.”

“And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.”

“I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”

And the people asked him, saying, “What shall we do then?”

He answereth and saith unto them, “He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.”

Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, “Master, what shall we do?”

And he said unto them, “Exact no more than that which is appointed you.”

And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, “And what shall we do?”

And he said unto them, “Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.”

And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not; John answered, saying unto them all, “I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire: Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.”

And John preached, saying, “There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose.”

“I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.”

And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.

But Herod the tetrarch (not the Herod that was dead), being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done, Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison. (But John was not yet shut up in prison in those days.)

***And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age (or began his thirtieth year)***

And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.

But John forbad him, saying, “I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?”

And Jesus answering said unto him, “Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness.”

Then he suffered him. And Jesus was baptized of John in Jordan.

Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, went up straightway out of the water: and the heaven was opened, and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the heavens opened. And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, “Thou art my beloved Son; in whom I am well pleased.”

And immediately the spirit driveth him into the wilderness.

And lo a voice from heaven, saying, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

And John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, “This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.”

And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli.

And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

No man hath fathomed God at any time, the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

9. Man Shall Not Live by Bread Alone

And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, so was Jesus led up of the spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of some devil. Being forty days tempted of this devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.

18. My Yoke Is Easy, and My Burden Is Light

And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.

Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus; Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.

These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, “As ye go, also preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’”

“Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.”

“Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses, Nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat.”

“And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony autoiV and the Gentiles.”

“But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak. For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.”

“But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come.”

“And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”

“Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.”

And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities.

26. By Two and Two

And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits; and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases. And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.

And they went out, and preached that men should repent. And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them. And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where.

39. They Bear Witness of Me

And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication, and it was winter.

And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon's porch.

Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, “How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly.”

Jesus answered them, “I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me.”

Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him.

Jesus answered them, “Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me?”

The Jews answered him, saying, “For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.”

Jesus answered them, “If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not. But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him.”

Therefore they sought again to take him: but he escaped out of their hand, And went away again beyond Jordan into the place where John at first baptized; and there he abode.

40. Our Father Which Art in Heaven

So he cometh into the coasts of Judaea by the farther side of Jordan: and the people resort unto him again; and, as he was wont, he taught them again. And many resorted unto him, and said, “John did no miracle: but all things that John spake of this man were true.”

And great multitudes followed him; and he healed them there.

And many believed on him there.

And the Pharisees came to him, and asked him, “Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife?” tempting him.

And he answered and said unto them, “What did Moses command you?”

And they said, “Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to put her away.”

And Jesus answered and said unto them, “For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept; apo de archV creation God made them male and female.”

“What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.”
