53. There Is None Other Commandment Greater Than These

And they watched him, and sent forth spies, certain of the Pharisees and of the Herodians, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor.

And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, “Which is the first commandment of all?”

And Jesus answered him, “The first of all the commandments is, ‘Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul,’ and with all thy mind, ‘and with all thy strength:’ this is the first commandment.”

“And the second is like, namely this, ‘Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.’”

“There is none other commandment greater than these.”

And the scribe said unto him, “Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he: And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.”

And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, “Thou art not far from the kingdom of God.”

And Jesus sat over against the treasury, And he looked up and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much.

And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing.

And he said, “Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all: For all these have of their abundance cast in unto the offerings of God: but she of her penury hath cast in all the living that she had.”

And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, “Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury: For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.”

And as some spake of the temple, how it was adorned with goodly stones and gifts, he said, “As for these things which ye behold, the days will come, in the which there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.”

And they asked him, saying, “Master, but when shall these things be? and what sign will there be when these things shall come to pass?”

Then said he unto them, “Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.”

“But before all these, they shall lay their hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name's sake.”

“And it shall turn to you for a testimony.”

“Settle it therefore in your hearts, not to meditate before what ye shall answer: For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist.”

“And ye shall be betrayed both by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolks, and friends; and some of you shall they cause to be put to death.”

“But there shall not an hair of your head perish.”

“In your patience possess ye your souls.”

“And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.”

“And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.”

“And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.”

“Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.”

And as he went out of the temple, one of his disciples saith unto him, “Master, see what manner of stones and what buildings are here!”

And Jesus answering said unto him, “Seest thou these great buildings? there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.”

And Jesus departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple.

And Jesus said unto them, “See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.”

And in the day time he was teaching in the temple; and at night he went out, and abode in the mount that is called the mount of Olives.

And all the people came early in the morning to him in the temple, for to hear him.

And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, “Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?”

And Jesus answered and said unto them, Indeed nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.”

“Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake. And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.”

“And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.”

“But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.”

“And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.”

“Behold, I have told you before.”

“Wherefore if they shall say unto you, ‘Behold, he is in the desert;’ go not forth: ‘behold, he is in the secret chambers;’ believe it not.”

“For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.”

“And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.”

“Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.”

“But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.”

“Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.”

And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said unto his disciples, “Ye know that after two days is the feast of the passover, and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified.”

And as he sat upon the mount of Olives over against the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately, “Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign when all these things shall be fulfilled?”

And Jesus answering them began to say, “Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away. But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.”

“Watch ye therefore. And what I say unto you I say unto all, ‘Watch.’”
